I
am interested in the creative purity that comes from
thoughtlessness; this space of clarity can only emerge when the mind
quietly
retreats into stillness. I begin each painting in this space, with no
preconceived notion or goal set in mind for a final product. It is as
if the paintbrush—guided by my subconscious—dips itself into specific
colors
and selects where and how to smear each stroke of paint.
After
this initial phase where the first layer is
applied, I proceed in a more thoughtful, methodical manner. I observe
the
composition until I identify a pattern or story. I like to work in
disparate
layers and juxtapose contrasting forms and colors. I am interested in
the
principle of duality and the way opposing elements come together to
create wholeness.
I
explore the play of light and dark, overlap the form
with the formless, and dab on patterns that are both muted and
psychedelic. As
a result, my paintings aesthetically reside in abstraction and often,
only bear
a slight reference to the recognizable world. My hope is for the viewer
to
glide into a place that is at once familiar and eerily unfamiliar.
